The Secrets to Writing an A+ College Paper

There can be few university or college students who would claim that writing a paper is an easy task. Like it or loathe it, paper writing is a fundamental requirement of studying for a master’s, bachelors or even an associate’s degree. If you are a student of an online college, studying part time, you’ll need to try and get those top grades while juggling study with your working life as well. .

Like any task, writing a paper for an A+ grade is only as hard as you make it. Follow these tips and techniques, take a methodical approach to your task and tough as it might seem now, you can Ace that paper every time.

Make Sure the Assignment is Clear

Many students have fallen foul of misunderstandings about assignments. No matter how hard you work on a degree course paper, if you haven’t understood the assignment correctly, the hard work will be for nothing. Be sure you know if you are expected to write a report, position paper or issue analysis. Your approach will be different for each of these.

Start with Basic Research

Unless you happen to know the topic of your paper really well, which rarely happens, go back to the basics of research. If necessary, start as a fifth grader would and obtain some books which outline the most basic facts about your topic. Chronicle the facts in a timeline. The reason for this technique is that you can’t successfully formulate the complex arguments required for a college degree paper if you are hazy on the basic storyline of the topic.

Select a Topic that Interests You

If you can choose a topic that you’re interested in, you have a stronger motivation to put in a high degree of effort to create a great paper. Even if you don’t know the topic well, use your initial research to home in on aspects, questions or arguments which pique your curiosity. This will encourage you to carry out more detailed research as your own thirst for knowledge will overcome any inertia.

Write up An Outline

As you carry out your research, start to outline your paper and put it into an organized structure. Separate your outline into three parts; the introduction, body and conclusion. It’s also a good idea to start adding citations into your outline too, so you can just transfer them to the final paper when you come to write it.

Use the Three-Point Thesis Approach

When you finally come to write your paper, you can structure it in a similar way to your outline. The three-point thesis approach is a straightforward and clear way to present your information. Although you are writing for a bachelor’s or master’s degree, your paper’s structure need be no more complicated than essays you wrote in school.

This approach breaks down your paper into three distinct sections. Begin with an introduction, which should act as an overview of your position and if possible contain a quotation, sentence or question to draw the reader in. This is known as a hook. The introduction should flow into your thesis statement, which should comprise just one sentence containing three to five points.

After the introduction comes the body of your paper. The body should contain the information and evidence to support the points made in your thesis statement. If you were diligent in your research, you should have plenty of research information, examples and evidence to prove the points of your argument or position.

The conclusion of your paper should not act merely as a summary. A good conclusion will tie up all the key points in your thesis statement and answer any questions posed. An A+ paper will state your position very clearly in the conclusion, rather than just state the considerations of both sides of the argument.

Beware of Over-Quoting

Try to compose your paper using your own thoughts and views as much as possible. When grading, professors make a point of examining if you clearly understand the topic and the position you have taken.  Using a lot of elaborate quotes is unlikely to get you and A+, so keep quotes short and don’t incorporate too many of them.

The tips and techniques described here will not get you an A+ paper toward your bachelor’s degree on their own. However if you follow them, get an early start on your research and give yourself enough time to execute high quality work, there’s no reason you shouldn’t get a top grade.
